Ko te reo tēnei o Kīngi Tuheitia
E pōwhiri nei i ngā manuwhiri
Ki Karāpiro, ki Waipā,
Ki te take o Maungatautari
Welcome to Waiparowing.com. This site provides links to information and service providers in the Waipa District that we trust will be of help to visitors and in particular to people planning to come to the district to enjoy the World Rowing Championships at Karapiro in 2010.
Waipa District is an official partner and supporter of Karapiro 2010.
The translation of the karanga gifted by Hemoata (Ollie) Kara is:
This is the call of King Tuheitia
To welcome visitors
To Karāpiro, to Waipā,
To the base of Maungatautari mountain
Karanga means call. The karanga at the beginning of the DVD is a call of welcome by tāngata whenua (hosts) to the manuwhiri (visitors). At a pōwhiri (welcome gathering) the first karanga by the hosts is usually reciprocated by the visitors responding with their karanga.
The karanga is not just a call of one person to another. It is a spiritual call that has been heard in Aotearoa for many generations and it provides the medium by which the living and the dead of the manuhiri may cross the physical space to unite with the living and the dead of the tāngata whenua. It can also be an identifying call from the manuhiri indicating where the group has come from.
When not at the rowing, take time to explore our district. Come and see Waipa's natural beauty, enjoy a warm welcome, have fun shopping and visiting our many cafés and restaurants.
